Aurora is a 2018 Filipino horror thriller film.
written and directed by Yam Laranas and starring Anne Curtis. It serves as an official entry to the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival and marks Curtis' third and last film of 2018, following her box-office hits Sid & Aya: Not a Love Story and BuyBust. The film is inspired by the 1987 disaster of MV Doña Paz's collision with MT Vector.
The story follows Leana (Curtis) who lives peacefully in the island with her younger sister Rita. Everything changes when a ship named Aurora crashes near their vicinity. Rita has an ability to see dead people, but every time she sees them, disastrous and catastrophic events occur. Leana must then protect the young girl at any cost before it is too late. The film was partially inspired by the sinking of the Philippines' MV Doña Paz.
A passenger ship named Aurora crashed into a rock near the shore of a small island. After conducting a search, there are still some bodies of victims who have not been found. Because it had taken a long time, the search was stopped. However, the victim's family secretly requested that Leana (played by Anne Curtis), the owner of a beachfront inn not far from where the Aurora ship was stranded and at the same time as a temporary base during the search, continued the search. They promised to pay a hefty sum for each body Leana found.
Only living alone with her sister, Rita (Phoebe Villamor), after the death of her parents, Leana accepts the offer. He then cooperates with Eddie (played by Allan Paule), a local fisherman, with a profit-sharing agreement. Strangely, since then Leana began to see sightings of Aurora's victims. Not only on the rocks, but even inside the inn.
Knowing that Eddie is more eager to find ship cargo and sell it, Leana asks her best friend (or boyfriend?), Ricky (played by Marco Gumbao), to come with Eddie. Ricky's older brother, Phillip (Arnold Reyes), happens to be one of the local survivors of the Aurora tragedy.
While diving near the boat with Eddie, Ricky finds the body of a tall, large man. They then brought it to the mainland and showed it to Leana. Rita is not afraid, Leana deliberately hides it in the warehouse.
The existence of the man's body turned out to make the appearance at the inn even more massive. Rita was even seen several times visiting room 2A on the top floor, the room where previously Leana had seen someone's appearance. Later Cecile (played by Andrea Del Rosario), Eddie's wife, also saw an apparition in the room. This incident makes Cecile force Eddie to no longer cooperate with Leana.
Gradually the facts began to emerge. From Phillip, it was known that the body of the tall man was already dead when he was brought inside the Aurora. Whether there is a connection or not, along the way there were many strange events on the ship. Starting from the lights off to the sudden drop in temperature. Some associate it with the man's corpse, which is considered unlucky for Aurora.
The climax is when the captain of the ship seems to deliberately direct Aurora to the rock. An accident happened. It was later revealed that the ship was overloaded, or excess passengers. Some of the stowaway were collected in a locked warehouse so as not to be caught when the ship was inspected. Unfortunately for them, when an accident occurs, they can't do anything at all. It was their bodies that in the end could not be found because they were still trapped in the ship.
This is known to Leana and Rita when they both experience a magical journey to the moment where Aurora has an accident. Upon returning to the real world, the bodies of the missing Aurora victims were all already inside Leana's inn.
