69 (2025) Filipino Movie Review: A New Vivamax Drama About Life and Love in Manila

Movie Review: 69 (2025) – A Tapestry of Lives in Manila

Overview

Director: Rodante Pajemna Jr.

Studio: Vivamax (Philippines)

Language: Tagalog / Filipino

Genre: Drama

Release: Digital premiere on 22 August 2025, rated R-18

Premise

69 intimately weaves together five lives within the bustling heart of Manila. Through a series of intersecting bar encounters, each individual's story unfolds—marked by desire, heartbreak, and personal revelation. The tagline hints: "Five lifetimes intertwine through a series of passing encounters – with each experience being a confession, and every peak mirror is a mirror to themselves."

Cast

The film features a diverse ensemble, including:

Aliya Raymundo

Ashley Lopez

Queenie De Mesa

Juan Paulo Calma

Mhack Morales

Paula Santos

Review Summary

Strengths:

Ensemble Storytelling: By spotlighting multiple characters, 69 explores Manila's human mosaic through intimate vignettes, giving depth to everyday encounters.

Raw Emotional Core: The film seems to trade flashy spectacle for subtle revelations—moments of vulnerability, longing, and connection.

Director’s Intent: With its thematic framing (every "peak mirror" reflecting oneself), the film suggests a reflective mindset—each character is struggling with their own self-image and truths through these shared moments.

Potential Weaknesses:

Fragmented Narrative: Interwoven stories can risk feeling disconnected or lacking in resolution—some viewers may prefer more cohesive arcs or a central protagonist.

Depth vs. Breadth: With five main narratives, individual character development may feel truncated. The emotional impact might be lessened if the film doesn't allow enough time for audiences to invest deeply in each story.

Overall Impression

69 offers an evocative glimpse into Manila’s pulse, structured around fleeting yet impactful human connections. Its approach may not be for all—fans expecting a conventional arc might find the episodic format uneven—but those receptive to quiet drama and urban realism may find its moments of introspection resonate deeply.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ English:

Life often feels like a collection of brief stories. We meet people for a short time, yet their impact stays with us. This movie reminded me that every encounter, no matter how small, carries meaning.

Maalikaya (2025) – A Bold Filipino Thriller About Women Reclaiming Power

Director: Roman Perez Jr.

Stars: Sheena Cole, Aliya Raymundo, Jenn Rosa

Genre: Drama, Thriller

Country: Philippines

Language: Filipino

Synopsis

“Maalikaya” is a gripping drama-thriller set in the rural heartlands of the Philippines, where three women from different walks of life struggle against a system that seeks to silence them. Directed by Roman Perez Jr., the film shines a powerful light on the themes of agency, survival, and female empowerment.

Story & Characters

The story revolves around three strong but vulnerable women:

Joyce (Sheena Cole), a domestic helper desperate to escape her abusive employer and reclaim her dignity.

Bela (Aliya Raymundo), the daughter of a farmer, hiding a traumatic past while trying to protect her family's land.

Laarni (Jenn Rosa), a traffic enforcer who turns whistleblower after discovering corruption within her ranks.

Each storyline unravels slowly, eventually interweaving into a haunting portrait of courage under fire. The rural setting plays a silent but powerful role — both beautiful and suffocating — symbolizing the paradox these women live in.

Direction & Themes

Roman Perez Jr. directs with a steady hand, balancing the film’s emotional intensity with moments of quiet strength. He doesn’t romanticize rural life — instead, he reveals its brutal truths while celebrating the resilience of its people.

The central themes include:

    Power vs. Powerlessness

    Resilience in Isolation

    Justice in a Corrupt System

    Female Solidarity

What sets Maalikaya apart is how it explores these topics without being preachy. It trusts the audience to feel the tension and recognize the injustice.

Performances

The trio of lead actresses delivers a standout ensemble:

Sheena Cole as Joyce is raw and grounded, carrying quiet pain and deep strength.

Aliya Raymundo adds intensity as Bela — a character torn between silence and outcry.

Jenn Rosa brings steel and emotion to Laarni, a woman whose courage grows with each act of defiance.

Their performances elevate the script, making each woman’s struggle deeply personal and painfully real.

Cinematography & Sound

The visual tone is earthy, capturing both the natural beauty and the underlying bleakness of the setting. The cinematography enhances the themes of entrapment and liberation. The score is minimalist but effective, creating unease when needed, and tenderness in rare, intimate moments.

Final Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 Stars)

Maalikaya is more than just a thriller — it’s a socially conscious film that speaks directly to the unspoken truths of many women in rural areas. It’s bold, raw, and emotionally stirring. If you're looking for a Filipino film that combines heart-pounding tension with thought-provoking substance, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Movies Review CELESTINA: BURLESK DANCER

 Movies Review CELESTINA: BURLESK DANCER

Country : Philippines

Movie stars : Christine Bermas, Sid Lucero, Yen Durano

Director : Mac Alejandre

Genre : Drama

Celestina: Burlesk Dancer (2024) takes an interesting perspective on Celestina's claim to fame, working in a strict and prestigious burlesque house.

Here is a list of the main cast in the film Celestina: Burlesk Dancer (2024):

Yen Durano as Celestina / Tinay, a mother who becomes a burlesk dancer to support her child during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s.

Christine Bermas as Rosalinda, a burlesk dancer who helps Tinay get a job at the theater.

Sid Lucero as Cornelio, Tinay's husband who is a former haciendero who is now a drunkard, gambler, and a womanizer.

lionheartv.net+1mb.com.ph+1

Arron Villaflor as Leandro, a man who is interested in Tinay and turns out to be a member of the Hukbalahap.

Allan Paule as Estong, the owner of the theater where Tinay and Rosalinda dance.

Aiko Garcia and Angie Castrence, who also stars in the film.

"Celestina: Burlesk Dancer" – When Stage Lights Hide Wounds**

On stage, Celestina is a goddess of the night—glittering, alluring, untouchable. But behind the velvet curtains and the applause of her devotees, she is just a human being—with wounds, with longings, with dreams that are about to die.

*Celestina: Burlesk Dancer* is not just a film about erotic dance or the glamour of nightlife. It is a visual poem about bodies that are used for entertainment, about souls that are locked behind heavy makeup and fake smiles. The film dances between sensuality and pain, inviting the audience to witness the conflict between dignity and need, between love and existence.

In the hands of the director, Celestina is not just a character. She is a symbol. She represents thousands of women whose lives are a spectacle, but whose stories are never truly heard.

The acting of the main character—bearing the character's name with an almost suffocating intensity—is not only strong, but honest.

There is an explosion of emotion in every glance, in every breath after the dance is over. We don't just see Celestina; we feel with her.

The cinematography is like a surrealist painting. Blood red, gold, and black dominate the screen like raging emotions: passion, anger, loss. The accompanying music creeps into the spine, making the quiet moments feel louder than the long dialogue.

But make no mistake, this is not a comfortable film. It is not meant to please. It disturbs. It forces us to ask: who is really dancing? Celestina... or the rest of us who continue to watch, judge, consume without a care?

**Verdict:**

*Celestina: Burlesk Dancer* is not a light watch.

Title : Sandwich 2023

Stars : Katrina Dovey, Andrea Garcia, Nico Locco, Luke Selby

Directed : Jao Daniel Elamparo

A newly wed couple invites a woman for threesome. Unknown to them someone is watching their sexcapade. When the threesome becomes foursome, that’s when chaos begins.

Expat Edward (Luke Selby) and nurse Ria (Kat Dovey) have been married for three years. Edward already has a son Pippa (Lucas Matthey Francia) whom he left with his parents (Lee O'Brian and Kathy Mulville) in England. Edward and Ria are very active with their sex life, but they don't have children of their own yet. To add spice, they contact a girl Candice (Andrea Garcia) from the internet for a threesome experience.

In a neighboring condo, there lives a drug dealer Andrew (Nico Locco) who runs an illegal business with his friends (Sahil Khan and Michael Olusegon). This Andrew is a sex pervert who uses binoculars and a telescope to look into condo windows and spy on people engaging in sexual activity. When he peeps on Edward and Ria several times, Andrew becomes obsessed with Ria, and finds a way to relate to her.

This film was supposed to be made the day before the COVID-19 lockdown on March 17 2023. Even so, Edward and Ria still called the maid (Nina Castinlag) to clean the condo, hired a handyman (Chadd Solano) to fix the AC, and entertained guests including Edward's family and aunt. Ria (Regin Tolentino). No one wore masks at all, nor did they wear bunny outfits at Ria's hospital, unlike what actually happened those days.

As the story progresses, one wonders why writer Reynold Giba made a pandemic the setting for the film. In fact, after their guests leave, Edward and Ria have enough time to engage with the threesome, first with Candice, and then with Andrew, a total stranger to those who happen to be in their elevator. This story could have happened at any time. The pandemic is never very important to the plot literally, or even symbolically.

To fill the airtime between sex scenes, much time is spent on TV interviewees, such as a priest (Rene Durian) on the spiritual aspects of the pandemic, and a psychiatrist (Apollo Abraham) discussing the six differences. kind of relationship. I suspect many viewers will just fast-forward through long didactic scenes of random topics only tangentially related to the plot.

Kat Dovey and Luke Selby did quite well in their dramatic roles, much better than their previous appearances on Vivamax. Auteur Brillante Mendoza continues his recent trend of supervising new director projects. Jao Elamparo's direction is commendable on the technical side regarding DP Freidric Macapagal Cortez's camera work and Jake Abella's score. However, in telling the story, Elemparo's meaning is not clear, topics of conversation appear from nowhere and lead nowhere .

Woke Up Like This tackles the story of two different people from both world, they are Sabrina a top model who is quite mean to people who help her special her yaya, and Nando an aspiring basketball player who is very independent that he forgets to value the people around him.
Things will turn around after they met an old man that will teach them a lesson that eventually changed their lives.

Woke Up Like This uses a simple yet very effective comedy, I liked how the humor was delivered here and how it connected itself to the audiences. I also love how Regal Films is bringing back comedy movie that teaches us audiences’ lessons and values, these kind of comedy films are rare these days.

On the acting department, Lovi Poe was the bomb that surprised us, since this is her first full length comedy movie my expectations were really not that high, but she was able impress not only me but also other people who are watching inside the cinema. This is so far my favorite Lovi Poe movie, she went all out and no holds barred in this one.

Vhong Navarro delivered the goods as well, but I felt he wasn’t able to justify his portrayal of Sabrina’s character that sometimes I feel he was portraying a gay role already, anyway he still made me laugh with his antics and of course the humor is always there.

Another character that stood out for me is Bayani Agbayani, he brought genuine laughter in his scenes.

Over all Woke Up Like This is a good movie, the writers Jeps Gallon and Joma Labayen were able to incorporate their comic skills as they were able to make such a hilarious comedy movie, and also kudos to Direk Joel Ferrer as he was able to execute the movie well and he was able to show a different Lovi Poe.

Woke Up Like This is now showing in cinemas near you.
