Direk Roman has really come a long way from the time he was directing children’s shows like “Team Yey” (that ran for several seasons) and soaps on TV. He admits that he earns more from directing for television than in doing films for streaming.

“But mas enjoy po talaga ako gumawa ng full length films,” he says. “Sa TV, may showrunners at sila ang nasusunod. As a film director, I call the shots and I get to do the materials that I want to do.”

His latest work, “Kamadora”, is once again full of his trademark **x and violence scenes. The first thing you’ll notice about it is its quirky structure that makes the story quite unpredictable.

This theater actor-turned-TV-and-movie-star was last seen in the MMFF comedy Meant To Beh and the noontime teleserye Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin.

The story revolves around two complete strangers, Raffy and Gela, who take part in a group excursion in Palawan, each on their own. Their common, titular surname, though, has the rest of the group mistaking them for a married couple, with the two of them, eventually going along with it. Raffy is on a trip to remember and Gela on one to forget, and their past, “failed” relationships eventually bring the two closer together, even more so since they end up sharing the same room hotel. A number of visits in the beautiful sceneries of the area and an even larger number of tequila shots, make the two open up about their personal feelings, and somewhere between the dialogue and the trip, their healing begins.

As I mentioned in the prologue, Bernardo has staged the film much like a theatre play, since, despite the change in locations and setting, the majority of the movie is comprised of dialogue between the two protagonists. Due to this, the quality of these conversations is what dictates the quality of the film, and in that aspect, “Mr and Mrs Cruz” thrives. The discussions of the duo are cheerful, very interesting, as they present a number of comments ranging from social media and literature, to marriage and relationships in general, and highlight the exceptional chemistry of the two. In that fashion, JC Santos and Ryza Cenon as Mr and Mrs Cruz respectively, are great in their parts, highlighting their need to connect through an adorable, cat and mouse game of equal denial, with gusto and nuanced performances.

Since the movie would be somewhat tiresome if the dialogues took the narrative completely over, Bernardo took care of letting it function also aSans a tour guide to the beauties of the area, presenting a number of locations of extreme allure. Boy Yniguez’s cinematography makes the most of these settings, as the film also succeeds as a promo of the area. His framing, particularly during the dialogues, is also great, highlighting the psychology of the two, and how close they keep coming, in elaborate fashion. 

“Mr and Mrs Cruz” is easy to watch, very entertaining, and filled with cheerfulness and beauty.

Mama's Girl is a heartwarming tale of mother and daughter that shows unconditional love to each other. A movie that will definitely touch your heart and make you cry. Sylvia Sanchez delivers a touching performance with a touch of coolness as mother. Sofia Andres and Sylvia Sanchez has a right chemistry to portray as daughter and mother. Mama's Girl reflects modern family life and  situations where a millennial daughter and mother canfind themselves in. 

It has a good tight story which manages to be witty and affecting. The film is a good vehicle to launched Sofia Andres and Diego Loyzaga (SoFiego) as love team in the film. They bring kilig and young vibes in the film. Jameson Blake is effective as a third wheel to SoFiego. So if you want to bond with your mom or your family this movie is a perfect treat. A wonderful heart warming film with inspiring story.

1. For a story about motherly love, there was too much time spent on the landian between Abbypotpot and best friend Nico (Diego Loyzaga). He kept calling her Budz and I really thought it was short for Budjoy because they were basically playing the reversed roles of Ned and Budjoy in Labs Kita Okay Ka Lang?. Unfortunately, I was rooting for Zak the entire time.

2. While other mothers would ask their kids not to cry upon their death, Mama Mina’s loving advice to Abbypotpot was “Hindi pa ako patay. Tipirin mo na lang ang mga luha mo sa libing ko.” Eek!

3. Sofia’s a lovely girl, but the abundance of her pink blush here gave new meaning to pumuputok. At least she looked very much like a #VavaengMarangal.

4. Upon reading the words “Ang pagluluto ay parang pagmamahal. Kelangan bantayan at kapag hindi ka marunong pumili ng mga sangkap, lahat mababalewala”, Abbypotpot magically turned into a chef that could save their restaurant business. Nahiya bigla ang lahat ng Culinary Arts students.

Bloody Crayons is a 2017 Philippine suspense thriller film based on the book of the same name by Wattpad writer Josh Argonza. Directed by Topel Lee, the film features an ensemble cast including Janella Salvador, Jane Oineza, Maris Racal, Ronnie Alonte, Sofia Andres, Diego Loyzaga, Yves Flores, Empoy Marquez, and Elmo Magalona.

Development began in April 2015 when Star Cinema picked up the film rights of the book, originally billed by Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia and Manolo Pedrosa. It was announced to be released in 2016 but undergone numerous recasting as well as the departure of the film's initial director Quark Henares,and production was pushed back beyond the said release date. A final cast was teased on the social media site Twitter late December 2016 but a change was again made early February 2017 replacing Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia, with Janella Salvador and Elmo Magalona. Production has pushed through and was released on July 12, 2017. 

A group of friends goes to an island for a short film project when they are attacked by a mysterious killer after playing a game of bloody crayons.

Nine graduating students head to an island across the sea to finish their final project at school. They include Eunice, a timid and soft-spoken young woman; Olivia, Eunice's best friend; Kenly, Olivia's boyfriend with whom she is in a cool-off mode; Justin, Kenly's best friend who is exuberant and outspoken;Party-girl and very girly Richalaine; Marie, whose attributes are prim and classy; Gerard, the class clown also the eldest of the group; Kiko, who is the photographer and has admiration for Eunice; and John, a newcomer student who also harbors romantic feelings for Eunice. They all head out to Olivia's parents' summer home in an island to shoot a short film. On the island they meet Mang Pedring, a caretaker who instantly causes the group to feel uneasy. Olivia notices Kenly's cold nature towards her, causing her to think he has found someone new. She discovers that Kenly has been dating Marie all along, much to her dismay. To top it all off, Eunice has known the entire time and chose to remain oblivious, thinking she is protecting her friend. A fight ensues on both parties. 

The next morning, when their shooting commences, Olivia approaches her friends as if nothing happened. Soon, a storm starts, prompting the group to stop shooting. That night, the friends decide to play a game of "Bloody Crayons," a form of "truth or dare?" with a twist. Everyone is instructed to form a circle around a box that has four sets of five crayons—black, white, pink, blue and red. Each color represents a consequence, and each player will draw one crayon at a time. Black represents a rule to be given by the drawer. This rule is to be followed during the course of the game until the next black crayon is drawn. Failure to follow the rule means the drawer will vandalize the face of the violator. White represents immunity of the drawer from the rule until the next white crayon is drawn. Pink crayons represent friendship and whoever draws a pink crayon will choose a friend and have them make the drawer perform a dare. Blue crayons represent honesty. The drawer will confess something they have not done. If the other friends have done the confession, they have to vandalize their own faces. The drawer can also write on the face of someone they know has done the confession. Lastly, red is considered the bloody crayon, the most exciting piece in the game. The three people to draw the first three red crayons will be given the chance to each put a substance of their choosing in a cup and the last person to draw the red crayon will unfortunately drink the mixture. The game is over when the last red crayon is drawn.

The mayor, who is grooming his son to become a politician himself, gets worried about bad publicity and hires PR strategist, Raffy Sandoval (John Lloyd Cruz), to clean up the mess and get Aprilyn back together with Randy.

Aprilyn, who is left by her groom, Randy, on the day of their wedding, becomes viral online. Devastated, she meets Raffy who works at a PR agency hired by the father of the groom who will help her move on, so that Randy will win the mayor elections, when the public "forgives" him once Aprilyn forgives him. Then in the end, they realize that they love each other. 

The multi-awarded actor was last seen in the 2016 Lav Diaz film Ang Babaeng Humayo and on the first week of hit teleserye La Luna Sangre where he reprised his Imortal character, Mateo.

Antoinette Jadaone's Love You to the Stars and Back relies on a very difficult proposition – that two complete strangers who serendipitously meet each other under embarrassing circumstances can become lovers just after a short period of time.

Giant leap of faith

In Tadhana's case, Anthony (JM de Guzman) offers to help distraught Mace (Angelica Panganiban) in a foreign airport. Their chance meeting will lead to an impromptu road trip to Sagada, where both of them heal each other's heartaches while quickly falling in love. In Love You to the Stars and Back, Mika (Julia Barretto) offers to bring Caloy (Joshua Garcia) to the hospital after she drives over his foot when they accidentally see each other answering nature's call.

Jadaone begs her audience for a giant leap of faith to believe that love, and not just any kind of love but the transformative and curative kind, can spring from these very random and chance encounters.

Rather than relying on the idea that the very brisk romances she conceives of are nothing but escapist fare which might be the most convenient excuse her films' too-easy premises, Jadaone peppers her films with realistic scenes of extended conversations – mostly humorous, sometimes about topics that have nothing to do with the plot, but always with the goal of enriching the chemistry and making the audience believe that quite possibly, the two strangers whose awkward initial encounters they have come to witness might really be soul mates.

In Love You to the Stars and Back’s case, Jadaone maximizes her leads’ youth and verve, having them engage in swift arguments and debates that rapidly erupt into a romance that, while at first might seem too sudden, proves to be very affecting.

Garcia, who proved to be a very capable leading man in Theodore Boborol’s Vince & Kath & James (2016), continues to be that astute actor who can add satisfying layers to his performance by gestures and line deliveries that are prompted by a mix of his intuition and a profound understanding of his character’s motivations. He can add levity to even the most dramatic of scenes, and add heft to the lightest of moments. Barretto is just as delightful here.

There he meets Aimee (Ella Cruz), a talented dubber that voices his crush Soo Mi Young (Yam Concepcion) in the Koreanovela "Program For Love." What Ollie didn't know is that Aimee is already an avid fan since the beginning of his career and vows to help Ollie to achieve his goals and fulfill his dreams to be a star.

Honestly, I really didn't think that I would like the film. We came in with limited expectation and tried to relax while waiting for the start of the film. When it started rolling, we were amazed how Fangirl, Fanboy turned out pretty entertaining right from the very beginning. It has a genuine vibe that can easily get the viewer's attention. Probably because of the oozing chemistry between the two lead stars.

Ella Cruz and Julian Trono acted naturally as if they were just enjoying their bonding together. From their viral dance videos, the two leveled-up  and proved that they could also act well and star in their own motion picture. Ella Cruz provided the wittiness that the character needs and sold us that she is really an ultimate fan girl who will do anything for his idol. She acted well and has that charisma to pull of everything even the material has some lapses at times. Julian Trono was impressive throughout. He has that appealing charm that made the crowd go wild whenever he appears on the screen. He made sure that people can also recognize him  not only in dancing but also in acting.

As for the story, it is quite simple yet it is enjoyable at all cost. The "kilig" are at its best coming from the slow motion scenes, cheesy lines and up to the part that made the crowd go wild with screams erupting inside the cinema. There are just some few important key points, especially at the conflict part that needs more stability to hold everything up.

Overall, Fangirl, Fanboy doesn't try too much but still came up with a satisfying romantic-comedy that made us an instant fan of this adorable love team. It is ably acted as Ella Cruz and Julian Trono exhibit a palpable chemistry that makes everything feel so sincere. Hopefully, this is their launching pad for more projects in the future as we are indeed excited to see more from these two future superstars.
