'I Love You, Hater' is still a creature of formula but its charm makes it hard to hate
There is one scene in Giselle Andres’ I Love You, Hater that makes the film almost worth all of its very many problems.
Noteworthy for several reasons
Zoey (Julia Barretto), clearly ecstatic, is in front of Joko (Joshua Garcia), her rival of several weeks for the position of assistant to media magnate Sasha (Kris Aquino).
She tells Joko of a sacrifice (which involved her lying to Sasha) and it weirdly does not result in the loving gratitude that she might have expected. Joko, dumbfounded because he knows how Zoey values honesty, begs her to tell him why she did it.
Out of perhaps the whole absurdity and foolishness of her feelings, Zoey starts to cry and confesses of her love for him despite knowing that he will never love her back because he is gay.
However, Joko is not gay.
He has been pretending to be gay just to have a stab at the lucrative job under Sasha. He also loves Zoey, and admits it, along with the fact that his being gay is all a ruse. Zoey doesn’t take it lightly, and her tears of self-pity quickly turn into tears of rage because of the betrayal of someone she has gotten to love to the point of embarrassing herself.
The scene is noteworthy for several reasons.
The scene allows Barretto, who has proven herself in previous films as a very fine actress, an opportunity to churn out a nuanced performance, one that is understanding of the subtle differences of various emotions conveyed by the act of crying.
Barretto’s performance however wouldn’t have been possible if the narrative, which is unabashedly convoluted right from the get go, didn’t unspool so relentlessly to reach such an emotionally affecting and surprisingly authentic confrontation between the two stunted lovers.
At least at that point of the movie, it works.
It almost seemed that its roundabout way of tackling the value of truth within the realm of relationships, profession, and even sexuality makes complete sense. It almost seemed that some of its brushes with insensitivity when it comes to portraying gays or their manners of coming out had some more reason to them than an attempt at amplifying either drama or comedy, which the film commits to quite feverously. The film is funny when it needs to be. It shifts to romance or drama with ease and mechanicality.
In fact, it almost seemed that the film was making a real statement and not just some palatable moralism that has always been tied to these commercial love stories.
There certainly are surprising loose ends that provoke. Sideplots, like the ones involving Zoey’s estranged father or Sasha’s ex-husband, are never granted the resolutions expected from rom-coms that ambition happy endings for everyone.
This can be interpreted to point to a more progressive direction for the genre considering that the repercussions of the loose ends are to portray women realizing their worth despite the neglect of the men in their lives.
I Love You, Hater is still a creature of formula.
It avoids cutting deeper than it should. It dwells on easily recognizable dilemmas and all the loud feelings that come with them. This isn’t bad at all, but its being simplistic does lead to several problems, most especially if its conceit is grounded on issues that require a little bit more sensitivity.
Oozing with charm
With all its problems, I Love You, Hater is a film that is hard to love.
Thankfully, it is also oozing with charm, making it a film that is harder to hate.

Oebanda’s “Bar Boys” tackles some of the above-mentioned themes but takes its cue from the lives of law school students. However, it doesn’t dwell on every article, code and case in a law book. It veers away from the seriousness of the courtroom and prefers to entertain viewers with its candid and accurate depiction of the triumphs, challenges and misadventures one encounters in law school.
Through the lives of four young men — Torran, Chris, Erik and Josh — “Bar Boys” answers quite a few questions, from what it takes to get into law school (and what you don’t need to get in), to what you need to stay and eventually graduate.
It tells us, in the most light-hearted and often comedic ways, what an aspiring lawyer needs to go through from the time he passes the qualifying entrance test to the time he needs to take the board exam. There are details to take note of and lessons to learn.
occo Nacino plays the slick and sometimes overconfident Torran Garcia, the alpha-male with a healthy middle-class background whose only purpose is to make it to graduation day. He belongs to a big, warm Filipino family, with parents that invite neighbors to celebrate the achievements of their offspring.
Torran has enough smarts to get into law school, unlike Josh (Kean Cipriano), who had to pursue a different path. He doesn’t have to measure up to the high expectations of his father in the same way the privileged Chris (Enzo Pineda) does, or loan money to pay for tuition, like Erik (Carlo Aquino).
Everything seems to fall into place for Torran. Not only is he fortunate enough to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer without complications; he’s so lucky he gets the chance to share an intimate encounter with one of the prettiest in class. Torran feels a moral dilemma only when he witnesses one of his fraternity brothers abuse a neophyte, and is torn between reporting the offense to school authorities or preserving his seat in the so-called brotherhood.
This is where we are given a glimpse into school fraternities and the sensitive issue of hazing is tackled. The only other form of conflict that worries Torran is when rifts between Erik and Chris threaten to dissolve the barkada.
Through Chris, we are told that grooming oneself to become a lawyer entails enormous sacrifices even if you’re born with a golden spoon inside your mouth. Chris has the option to instead go to an Ivy League university in the United States, but opts to take up law in the Philippines partly because he wants to be in close proximity with the girlfriend (Ana Luna) his father (Pontri Bernardo) doesn’t know about.
Erik’s plight reminds us that poverty should not prevent us from pursuing our dreams and that there are people who are willing to help and inspire us along the way, but in the end, success or failure awaits depending on our level of persistence and the quality of our work.
The scenes inside the classroom are funny even if they involve terror professors like Atty. Fernandez (Odette Khan) and even funnier with the presence of a young gay professor who fancies one of his students. Although entertaining to watch, the classroom episodes deliver a common serious message: you do not — you cannot — slack off in law school if you want to make it.
Most of the scenes are light, alright, but there are also a few that stand out for being heartbreaking and sincere, yet not overly dramatic. Music was used in just the right doses. In one scene that involves Erik and his father, who is an ageing security guard, dialogue is kept to a bare minimum but music more than makes up for its absence, resulting in beautiful, poignant portrayal.
Even if it has to tell the stories of essentially four different people, loose ends are firmly knotted together. Aside from being a movie on the lives of law students and an offbeat barkada film, “Bar Boys” is also a reflection of our society; one that mirrors the lives of people from different social standings as well as the good and bad values that Filipinos deal with separately at one point or the other.
It appeals to law students like Torran and his friends, but it also appeals to the rest of us because each of us is a student of life, continuously learning and trying to make it through.
While it remains on the safe side and is apolitical and refuses to make use of cases that might be startlingly relevant to the current events in the country, the film is sincere in everything else it does, delivering its finer points with sparkling clarity. You leave the cinema knowing that you’ve watched a pretty good feel-good movie.

Antoinette Jadaone's Love You to the Stars and Back relies on a very difficult proposition – that two complete strangers who serendipitously meet each other under embarrassing circumstances can become lovers just after a short period of time.
Giant leap of faith
In Tadhana's case, Anthony (JM de Guzman) offers to help distraught Mace (Angelica Panganiban) in a foreign airport. Their chance meeting will lead to an impromptu road trip to Sagada, where both of them heal each other's heartaches while quickly falling in love. In Love You to the Stars and Back, Mika (Julia Barretto) offers to bring Caloy (Joshua Garcia) to the hospital after she drives over his foot when they accidentally see each other answering nature's call.
Jadaone begs her audience for a giant leap of faith to believe that love, and not just any kind of love but the transformative and curative kind, can spring from these very random and chance encounters.
Rather than relying on the idea that the very brisk romances she conceives of are nothing but escapist fare which might be the most convenient excuse her films' too-easy premises, Jadaone peppers her films with realistic scenes of extended conversations – mostly humorous, sometimes about topics that have nothing to do with the plot, but always with the goal of enriching the chemistry and making the audience believe that quite possibly, the two strangers whose awkward initial encounters they have come to witness might really be soul mates.
In Love You to the Stars and Back’s case, Jadaone maximizes her leads’ youth and verve, having them engage in swift arguments and debates that rapidly erupt into a romance that, while at first might seem too sudden, proves to be very affecting.
Garcia, who proved to be a very capable leading man in Theodore Boborol’s Vince & Kath & James (2016), continues to be that astute actor who can add satisfying layers to his performance by gestures and line deliveries that are prompted by a mix of his intuition and a profound understanding of his character’s motivations. He can add levity to even the most dramatic of scenes, and add heft to the lightest of moments. Barretto is just as delightful here.

What happens if you lose the name, the warmth of the family at home? For everyone the house is a place where to laugh and tell stories with family members. But it is different with Manuel Bonifacio's family, who feel they have lost their name, the warmth of their family after the death of their beloved wife and all their children, Allan, Bryan, Cha and Dexter are busy with their respective jobs and choose not to live with their father. His father lived with only one relative. One day, his father, Manuel, received the shocking news that he had cancer, and he only had 7 weeks to live. Panic and anxiety even came to the children after being notified in a written message sent by their father. The four children decided to spend the remaining 7 weeks of their father's life in the house they grew up in.
The film by Cathy Garcia-Molina is really heartbreaking and makes you smack when you watch it. This film is clearly about a family. If the name is a family, there must be conflicts between one family member and another. Fortunately, the conflict given by this film feels so solid and fits for 2 hours. With the presence of 4 children, the conflicts that have occurred one by one can be tackled one by one. The conflict that this film provides is so pronounced with extraordinary music that fits the scene. For some viewers, the Seven Sundays film is a personal film, maybe you will be flustered by what happened in this film or do you also feel what is felt in this film?
The players in the Seven Sundays film produced by Star Cinema have strong chemistry with each other as family members. The way they speak from words and expressions feels like a whole family whose stories are real, not fictional. Call it Ronaldo Valdez as a father who feels so dignified, Aga Muhlach as the oldest child is so selfish but can be wise to protect his younger siblings, Dingdong Dantes, as the second most successful child among others, Christine Ryes as the only girl and has problems in his own family, as well as the bontot Enrique Gil, who felt isolated from family members after the death of his mother so he became a semi broken home.
Finally, the film Seven Sundays is a must-watch film for self-reflection for those of you who have family, younger siblings, and older siblings. You can be a little aware or even flustered by what is given in this filipine film. Prepare a tissue or handkerchief when watching the Seven Sundays film.

They say that Love is sweeter the second time around. For some, yes, we may consider that thought based on the reasons behind it. But for me, one is enough and two is too much. No matter how small or big it is, once you broke a person’s trust, all the truths will now be questionable.
Seeing this film “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter” directed by Joel Lamangan under Regal Multimedia Incorporated starring Ken Chan as Tristan Luna and Barbie Forteza as Erika Gallardo was such an inspiring yet hugotfilm because not all people considers giving second chances. It makes them think standing in that position whether or not to give them a second chance in to what they did. It also makes some think that they’re stupid enough to give what isn’t right to the person whom had hurt them most. On the other hand, inspiring ‘coz even though things may be rough, in the end there’s always a room for improvement and the chance to attest that things could be better even after we fall. Always remember that second chances are not given to make things right. But to sum it all up, this film has a good and awesome storyline.
